In relation to
other series that Nicolás García Sáez has been painting on the same theme, and
in keeping with his deep immersion in the study of Eastern teachings, this
painting could be interpreted as a metaphor for knowledge arising from the
encounter between two cultures. In Eastern tradition—whether in Hinduism,
Taoism or Tibetan Buddhism—the elephant is a symbol of wisdom, fertility and
good fortune. A mythical creature which, due to its patient nature, is
associated, on the one hand, with the ability to overcome obstacles with
serenity and, on the other, with a controlled, enlightened mind. In the
painting, this tradition—in which the elephant embodies the image of spiritual
authority—is, in a sense, interwoven with reason, the word and the logos, which
form the basis of knowledge in the West, condensed into that tangle of
multicoloured letters.
